Because so little light reaches Earth, astronomical images often require long exposures or many images stacked together to reveal hidden details.

A single subframe is one measurement, not a finished exposure in the everyday sense. The accepted subframes become the total integration. Their raw pixel values are usually linear and must be calibrated, aligned, combined, and stretched before faint structure can be displayed clearly.

Unlike daytime photography, the Earth’s rotation, weather, atmospheric conditions, and light pollution all have a significant impact on the final result.

Success in astrophotography is not just about having a good camera. It also depends on the sky, the equipment, and the techniques used to collect and process light.

The complete imaging system sets the result: optics determine framing and light delivery, the mount determines tracking, the sensor records the photons, the sky controls background and stability, and processing turns compatible measurements into a viewable image.
