Your Eyes

Your eyes are your first astronomical instrument. Long before telescopes existed, humans studied the universe simply by looking at the night sky.

The human eye is excellent at detecting bright objects such as the Moon, planets, and many stars. It allows us to experience the sky naturally and understand the patterns and movements of celestial objects.

However, our eyes have limitations. They cannot collect light for a long time, and many faint objects such as nebulae and distant galaxies are too dim to see clearly. Our eyes are also less sensitive to colours in very dark conditions.

This is why many deep-sky objects appear as faint grey shapes through a telescope, even though photographs show beautiful colours and details. Cameras can collect light over a much longer period, revealing information that our eyes cannot detect.
