Goal-Based Starting Setups

There is no single general-purpose setup that is best for every observer. Start from the experience you want.

• Visual observing: prioritize aperture you can transport, a stable mount, comfortable eyepieces, and easy setup.
• Wide-field deep sky: use a short focal length, a sensor that frames large targets, and a mount that tracks the payload reliably.
• Smaller deep-sky targets: add focal length only when seeing, guiding, focus, and sampling support it.
• Planetary imaging: prioritize aperture, long effective focal length, and a high-frame-rate camera for lucky imaging.
• Integrated smart-telescope workflow: prioritize portability, automated setup, and the ability to retain source frames when you want desktop control.
