Aperture as a System Choice
Use 80–200 mm as an example range, then judge aperture alongside field of view, seeing, mount demands, portability, and target scale.
An 80–200 mm aperture range covers many capable amateur instruments, but it is not a universal optimum. Aperture sets potential light collection and resolution; the complete system determines whether that potential reaches the image.
- 80–120 mm: often portable and well suited to wide-field refractors, but target framing depends on focal length and sensor.
- 120–150 mm: can add resolving and light-collecting potential while increasing mount and handling demands.
- 150–200 mm: can serve smaller targets well when seeing, tracking, focus, and sampling support the scale.
A larger aperture can be the wrong match for a large target if it arrives with a focal length that forces a mosaic. It can also be the right choice for high-frame-rate planetary imaging, where aperture and short-exposure resolution matter differently.
Judge the instrument by the subjects it frames, the mount it requires, and how often it can be used—not by diameter alone.
