Optimal Aperture: 80–200 mm

For most amateur astrophotographers worldwide, an aperture between 80 mm and 200 mm provides the best balance between performance, cost, and practicality.

  • • 80–120 mm: Excellent all-round choice. Ideal for wide-field nebulae, galaxies, and beginners. Provides stable performance even under average skies.
  • • 120–150 mm: A strong upgrade range, offering better light gathering and resolution while remaining manageable.
  • • 150–200 mm: Suitable for experienced users and darker skies, providing more detail on smaller galaxies and nebulae when atmospheric conditions allow.

Beyond 200 mm, the potential gains become increasingly dependent on excellent seeing, stable weather, and high-quality equipment. Larger apertures are especially valuable for planetary imaging and premium dark-sky locations.
