Choosing Focal Length by Field of View
Treat 400–1,500 mm as a set of examples and choose focal length from target size, desired framing, sensor size, sampling, seeing, and mount performance.
Focal length should follow the subject and sensor, not a universal range. The same telescope can be too narrow for a large nebula and too wide for a tiny planetary nebula.
- 400–700 mm: can frame many large nebulae and broad star fields, depending on sensor size.
- 700–1,000 mm: provides more image scale for medium-size galaxies and nebulae while asking more from tracking.
- 1,000–1,500 mm: can serve smaller targets when seeing, guiding, focus, and sampling support it.
Preview the actual field of view and leave crop margin. If a large target requires a mosaic, include overlap, per-panel integration, background matching, and processing time in the decision. A shorter focal length may produce a deeper and more coherent image in the same total time.
